ADA compliance

We recognize the UIC community has a diverse range of hearing, movement, sight and cognitive abilities. We must ensure that our IT resources, such as websites, web applications, teaching and learning technologies, digital content and other electronic platforms and communications can be used by all members of our community.

Accessibility is a necessity and a mandate. Keep in mind the different ways people perceive and process content when creating messages. All websites and materials that will be distributed electronically — including presentations, PDFs, images and video — must be ADA-compliant.

On April 24, 2024, the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division (DOJ) issued a final rule revising Title II of the ADA. The rule requires state and local governments to make their websites, mobile applications, and all other information and communication technology fully accessible for people with disabilities. The agency is adopting the technical standards of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA.

UIC has a deadline of April 24, 2026, to meet this compliance requirement. All UIC online content, including online courses, websites, mobile apps, electronic documents, communications, and multimedia content, must be accessible and compliant with the WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
