Name and boilerplate

Official full name: University of Illinois Chicago

Informal name/acronym: UIC

  • Use the full name of the university wherever possible.
  • Do not use a hyphen or “at” between Illinois and Chicago.
  • In body copy, always use the full name on first reference. Do not put the acronym, UIC, in parentheses after this first mention of the full name. You may, however, use the acronym UIC in subsequent references.
  • It is always best to use both names in any communication if possible. Keep in mind the intended audience. If you are confident your audience, such as an internal audience, knows UIC and what the acronym stands for, it is acceptable to use solely UIC. If it is an external audience with greater reach outside Chicago and Illinois, it is important to use the full name along with the acronym.
  • Consider the formality of the communication: If the material is official and very formal, it is best to use the full name.
