Brand strategy and messaging
Brand strategy
Our strategy is the foundation for the UIC brand. It’s a useful set of frameworks for anyone who communicates or creates content on the university’s behalf, so it’s tailored for marketers and communicators.
It serves as the blueprint for building our brand.
Audiences
Know your audience. That might be the most important thing to keep in mind when it comes to messaging. By understanding what an audience cares about, you can draw on a particular lens to color and frame your message.

Brand positioning and brand essence
The UIC positioning includes two strategic tools: the brand essence and the positioning statement. The brand essence is the heartbeat of the brand — a few powerful words that capture the spirit of UIC. The positioning statement is a concise, strategic summary of who UIC is, what we stand for and what makes us different from other universities.
Brand positioning

Brand messsaging
To help us communicate effectively, we’ve outlined four key themes that support the brand essence. This ensures that we’re telling the UIC story in a consistent way that reinforces the foundational idea. We build our story around these powerful themes to convey UIC’s offer and benefit (our core value proposition).
Key themes
- Location
- Culture
- Student success
- Innovation
UIC’s messaging map is a strategic storytelling framework that defines how we articulate the university’s value and impact. It provides direction, alignment and inspiration for anyone writing on behalf of UIC.
The messaging map starts at the center with our core value proposition, and all secondary and supporting points make that core stronger.

An attribute is what we offer to our audiences. Attributes include things like programs, facilities, culture and experiences. A benefit is what our audiences get. It’s the value of the attributes that we offer and why they matter.
